He often traveled alongside Tinus van Bakel, a fellow colleague within the tobacco trade who shared his interest in acquiring works of art. These professional and personal excursions included visits to significant locations such as the artists' colony of Sint-Martens-Latem in 1936.
Founding the Museum
The culmination of van Abbe's efforts as a collector occurred in 1936 with the establishment of the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. He provided a major donation to the institution to ensure its viability and the preservation of his acquired works. By integrating his private collection into a public facility, he created a lasting cultural entity in Eindhoven that continued to function following his death in 1940 at the age of 60.
