Willem Hendrik Maria Zijm earned a PhD in operations research at the Eindhoven University of Technology in 1982, completing a thesis titled Nonnegative Matrices in Dynamic Programming. This milestone marked the start of an extensive career in mathematical modeling, supply chain management, and academic leadership that spanned several decades within the Netherlands.
Academic Foundations and Early Career
Born on 3 May 1952 in Driehuizen, Texel, Zijm pursued his initial studies at the University of Amsterdam. In 1977, he secured a BSc in mathematics, physics, and astronomy, followed by an MSc cum laude in applied mathematics. His doctoral research was conducted under the supervision of Jaap Wessels and Gerhard Willem Veltkamp. Before completing his PhD, he began his professional path in 1981 as an assistant professor within the Department of Actuarial Sciences and Econometrics at the University of Amsterdam.
Industry Roles and Professorships
Between 1983 and 1990, Zijm shifted his focus to the private sector, working at Philips in Eindhoven as a consultant for operations research, manufacturing planning, and logistic management. During this period, in 1987, he accepted a part-time professorship at the Eindhoven University of Technology, focusing on mathematical models for operations management. He transitioned fully to the University of Twente in 1990, where he focused his research on production and operations management.

He served as the chair of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science between 2002 and 2004. Subsequently, he succeeded Frans van Vught to serve as Rector Magnificus from 2005 to 2009. Beyond his administrative duties, he mentored over 150 master students and more than 30 PhD candidates, including Ivo Adan, Geert-Jan van Houtum, Erwin Hans, and Nelly Litvak.
Professional Contributions and Retirement
After completing his tenure as Rector Magnificus in 2009, Zijm remained at the University of Twente as a professor of production and supply chain management. In 2011, he took on the role of director at the Dutch Institute for Advanced Logistics in Breda. His academic output includes various publications, such as his work on multi-resource scheduling and inventory models for repairable item systems. He retired from his professional activities in 2018.
