Hélène Duc

French actress (1917–2014)

Marcelle Duc, known to audiences as Hélène Duc, maintained a career as a French actor that spanned over five decades. Born in Bergerac in 1917, she established herself in both television and cinema before her death in the 14th arrondissement of Paris in 2014, leaving behind a legacy recognized for both her performances and humanitarian contributions.

Professional Screen Career

Duc appeared in various film productions throughout the latter half of the 20th century. Her screen credits include the 1951 film Edward and Caroline, the 1973 production Je sais rien, mais je dirai tout, and the 2001 film Tanguy. She reached a significant audience through her portrayal of Mahaut, Countess of Artois, in the 1972 television miniseries Les Rois maudits. Decades later, she returned to this source material in 2005 to play the character of Marguerite de Bouville in a new adaptation of the same novels.

Stage and Personal Life

Beyond her film and television work, Duc engaged in theater performances, including a 1983 production of Chienne Dactylographe at the Théâtre de la Gaîté-Montparnasse. In her private life, she was married to René Catroux. The couple had two daughters together.

Public Honours

In 2005, the Yad Vashem organization recognized Duc as Righteous Among the Nations for her efforts to save Jewish lives during the Holocaust. In the same year, she received institutional recognition within France. She was subsequently named an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 2011. Following her death at age 97, her remains were interred at the Crématorium-columbarium du Père-Lachaise.
