Haykanoush Danielyan

The title of People's Artist of the USSR was awarded to Haykanoush Danielyan in 1939, marking her as the first Armenian vocalist to receive this distinction. Her professional career spanned the opera houses of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, balanced alongside significant contributions to music education and legislative service within the Supreme Soviet.

Early Career and Education

Born in 1893 in Tbilisi, Danielyan pursued formal musical training at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, graduating in 1920. Her initial stage work placed her within the opera theaters of Petrograd and Tiflis, where she performed from 1922 until 1932. During this decade, she collaborated with fellow artists Levon Isetsky and Shara Talyan, participating in the Leninakan opera group and various concert performances.

Opera and Film Performance

In 1932, Danielyan became a soloist at the Yerevan Opera and Ballet Theater. Her repertoire included romances and operatic selections composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Glazunov, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Beyond the stage, she expanded her career to the screen in 1941, appearing in the Armenian Film-Concert produced at the Yerevan television studio.

Educational Leadership and Political Service

Danielyan joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1941. Her administrative and political life included serving as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union between 1946 and 1950, while simultaneously holding mandates in the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR. In the realm of pedagogy, she taught at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory from 1943 to 1951 and served as the director of the Tchaikovsky Secondary Music School from 1949 to 1952.

Recognition and Later Years

Throughout her career, Danielyan received numerous state honors, including the Stalin Prize and the Order of Lenin. She was also decorated with the Order of the Red Banner of Labour and the Medal for Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945. Following her death in 1958, she was interred at the Tokhmakh cemetery in Yerevan. Her professional legacy remains marked by a Yerevan School of Art named in her honor and a commemorative Armenian postage stamp issued in 2000.
