Upon returning to Nyasaland, Banda assumed a central role in the movement for national independence. He served as Prime Minister from 1964 until 1966, the year he oversaw the transition of Malawi into a republic. Assuming the presidency in 1966, he consolidated authority under the Malawi Congress Party. His political tenure continued through the establishment of a one-party state, culminating in a lifelong presidency that remained in place until 1994.
