Academic Foundation
Gunarto earned a bachelor's degree in Physics from Gadjah Mada University in 1978. He continued his studies abroad, receiving a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1984. He subsequently achieved his Doctor of Philosophy in 1988 from Washington State University. During his doctoral years, he collaborated on reports for the Boeing Airplane Company regarding Hankel Matrix problems in airplane control systems.

Between 1991 and 1994, Gunarto directed the development of the Pusyandi-Net system, which linked 50 university libraries across Indonesia. His administrative work at Gadjah Mada University included serving as the chair of Research and Development in the Computer Center and heading the Electronic and Instrumentation Lab. In 1994, he initiated the development of the master's program for the university's computer science department.
International Research and Teaching
As a research affiliate at the ICTP in Trieste, Italy, Gunarto supported UNESCO-backed initiatives for scientists in developing nations, including organizing the 1991 Asia Pacific Faraday Meeting. His teaching career included a faculty role at Gadjah Mada University from 1989 to 2007 and a tenure at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University starting in 2007. There, he developed programming curricula for students in the College of Asia Pacific Studies.

Gunarto published extensive material on computer networks and digital preservation, notably focusing on the cultural treasures of Borobudur.
