Tetra Pak reached global scale under the stewardship of Hans Rausing, who transformed a six-person family enterprise into a dominant multinational packaging firm. By securing the first machine export to the Soviet Union in 1959, Rausing expanded the business reach and later relocated to the United Kingdom, where he maintained his base until his death in 2019.
Professional Trajectory and Tetra Pak
Born in Gothenburg in 1926, Rausing pursued studies in economics, statistics, and Russian at Lund University, graduating in 1948. He joined Tetra Pak, founded by his father Ruben Rausing, and was appointed managing director in 1954 alongside his brother Gad. Rausing became chairman in 1985 before departing the company in 1993. In 1995, he sold his 50 percent stake to his brother. During his tenure, he focused heavily on Russian affairs and regional expansion, establishing the firm as a significant foreign employer in Russia.

Rausing moved to the United Kingdom in 1982 to manage his tax exposure, utilizing the remittance basis of taxation. Reports indicated that while he earned significant income, such as approximately £225 million in 2002, only a small fraction was subject to UK income tax. Forbes records estimated his family fortune at $10 billion in 2011 and $12 billion by the time of his death. From 2001 to 2012, Rausing and his family contributed £886,000 to the UK Conservative Party.
Philanthropy and Academic Recognition
Together with his wife Märit, Rausing supported medical research projects at the Karolinska Institutet and Lund University. Locally, the Märit and Hans Rausing Fund provided resources for community projects in Sussex. His academic honors included honorary doctorates from Lund University, the Stockholm School of Economics, and the Royal Institute of Technology. He held honorary professorships at Mälardalens Högskola and the University of Dubna. In 2006, he was appointed an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
