Working alongside chairman Reinhard Rauball and CFO Thomas Treß, he implemented rigorous cost-reduction measures, including a 20% salary reduction for the entire playing squad. To manage debt levels, he secured a naming rights deal for the Westfalenstadion, rebranding it as Signal Iduna Park in 2006, an agreement scheduled to last until 2031. He stepped down as CEO in 2025, with Lars Ricken named as his successor.
