Succession and Regency

His father, Prince Franz Joseph II, began a transition of authority in 1984 by handing over everyday governmental duties to Hans-Adam, who became regent. Upon his father's death on 13 November 1989, Hans-Adam formally ascended to the throne. In 2004, he followed his father's precedent by designating his eldest son, Hereditary Prince Alois, as regent while he remained head of state.

Political Influence and Controversies

During his reign, Hans-Adam successfully advocated for Liechtenstein joining the United Nations in 1990. In 1992, he pressured the government to schedule a referendum on European Economic Area accession, leading to the country joining the EEA in 1995. A 2003 referendum expanded his constitutional powers, while a 2012 vote upheld the princely family's right to veto outcomes of future referendums. In 1999, the European Convention on Human Rights ruled against Liechtenstein following a dispute regarding the appointment of public officials.

Writings and Outlook

In 2009, Hans-Adam published a political treatise titled The State in the Third Millennium, which advocates for the nation-state as a political actor and argues for limited government focused on the rule of law and foreign policy. Within the text, he posits that the legitimacy of a princely family derives from the assent of the people. He has also expressed support for same-sex marriage while maintaining opposition to adoption rights for same-sex couples.
