Academic and Research Foundation
Born in Ylivieska, Finland, in 1978, the author pursued an education that blended technical and theoretical study. He holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Oulu and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge. During his doctoral studies at the University of Edinburgh, he focused on mathematical physics. His professional preparation also included service as a research scientist for the Finnish Defence Forces.

Early creative efforts included the 2003 short story "Shibuya No Love" and "Deus Ex Homine," which appeared in a 2005 anthology of Scottish speculative fiction. While living in Edinburgh, he joined the Writers' Bloc collective. His debut novel, The Quantum Thief, arrived in 2010 through Gollancz, later followed by The Fractal Prince and The Causal Angel. These works earned him multiple nominations and awards, including the 2012 Tähtivaeltaja Award. His bibliography further spans collections like 2015's Collected Fiction and standalone novels such as the 2018 espionage procedural Summerland and 2024's Darkome.
Biotechnology and Entrepreneurial Ventures
Beyond literature, the author established several commercial research and technology entities. He served as founding director of ThinkTank Maths before co-founding Helix Nano with Nikolai Eroshenko in 2013. His later work includes the creation of Red Queen Bio, a startup focused on mitigating risks related to AI-driven bioweapons. This venture gained significant momentum in 2025 by securing $15 million in a seed funding round led by OpenAI.
