Born at the Rikshospitalet on 20 July 1973, Haakon Magnus became the monarch of Norway on 28 August 2026, succeeding his father, King Harald V. A member of the House of Glücksburg, he represents the fourth generation of the reigning Norwegian royal family and currently serves as the Supreme Commander of the Norwegian Armed Forces.
Formative Years and Education
Haakon is the younger child and only son of King Harald V and Queen Sonja. Despite the 1990 constitutional amendment introducing absolute primogeniture, he maintained his place in the line of succession ahead of his older sister, Princess Märtha Louise. His academic background includes time at the University of Oslo and the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Science in development studies from the London School of Economics.

A trained naval officer, Haakon attained the rank of admiral in the Royal Norwegian Navy. His military experience also includes completing a paratrooper course administered by the Special Operations Commando in 2016. Before acceding to the throne, he frequently served as regent during periods of his father’s health challenges. He has held numerous patronages, including the Ibsen Stage Festival and the Norwegian Refugee Council, and served as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme.
Public Initiatives and Accession
In 2013, he established the SIKT conference to foster dialogue among emerging leaders. His commitment to international development and leadership is reflected in his work with the Global Dignity foundation, which he co-founded in 2006. Upon becoming king in 2026, he adopted the regnal motto Alt for Norge, a tradition upheld by his predecessors. He formally swore allegiance to the Constitution of Norway on 1 September 2026, marking the commencement of his reign.
