Engineering Foundations
Born in 1963 in Evanston, Illinois, Shotwell attended Libertyville High School before pursuing technical studies at Northwestern University. She earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and a Master of Science in applied mathematics from the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Her early career included a management training program at Chrysler, followed by a decade-long tenure at The Aerospace Corporation starting in 1988, where she focused on thermal analysis and military space research, including the STS-39 mission.

In 1998, Shotwell joined Microcosm as director of the space systems division, overseeing business development. She moved to SpaceX in 2002 after meeting Elon Musk, initially focusing on business development before rising to president in 2008. Her tenure has seen the development of the Falcon 9 launch vehicle and the expansion of the company manifest to over 50 launches, generating multi-billion dollar revenues through logistics contracts for the International Space Station.
Operational Oversight
Shotwell maintains responsibility for daily operations, customer relations, and strategic growth. Her oversight includes significant engineering milestones such as the first landing of an orbital rocket's first stage, the reuse of orbital launch hardware, and the successful delivery of astronauts to Earth orbit in 2020.
