Early Career and International Debut
Schubert debuted for The Kookaburras on 9 July 2003 during a friendly match against Germany in Neuss. Later that year, he gained prominence at the Champions Trophy held in Amstelveen, where he recorded nine goals in six matches. His performance earned him the title of World Hockey Young Player of the Year from the International Hockey Federation in December 2003.

Following the 2004 Athens Games, Schubert played club hockey in The Netherlands, representing Kampong in Utrecht and subsequently HC Klein Zwitserland in The Hague. His career faced recurring physical challenges. A knee injury forced him to miss the 2006 Men's Hockey World Cup, and a similar injury sustained against Great Britain kept him sidelined during the 2008 Olympic semi-final and bronze medal matches. In 2011, an Achilles tendon injury prompted his temporary removal from the national squad.
National Team Tenure
Throughout his tenure, Schubert participated in numerous global competitions, including the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and the 2010 FIH World Cup in New Delhi, both resulting in first-place finishes. Under national coach Ric Charlesworth, he remained a consistent selection, participating in the 2009 Champions Trophy victory in Melbourne. In December 2011, he was named to the 2012 Summer Olympics Australian men's national Olympic development squad, training in Perth, Western Australia, during early 2012.
