Born in Däniken, Switzerland, in 1842, Gottfried Schenker established his freight forwarding firm at age 30. His primary innovation involved calculating through-tariffs for goods moving between major terminals, such as London and Istanbul. By providing a single point of responsibility for house-to-house transport, he effectively outpaced competitors in speed and cost, setting a precedent for modern freight management.

Operating from his base in Vienna, Schenker rapidly expanded his network across the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and its surrounding regions. He opened offices in Budapest, Prague, Trieste, Sofia, Belgrade, Salonika, and Constantinople. While local distribution relied on horse-drawn coaches, long-distance movement utilized the rail network and, increasingly, sea routes. To facilitate these broader connections, he acquired stakes in various shipping lines.
Global Logistics and Infrastructure
Schenker’s transport operations eventually reached beyond European ports to the United States. His company maintained a presence on the Atlantic Ocean, deploying vessels named after himself and his wife, Betty. By integrating emerging telecommunications through investments in telegraph companies, he linked logistics with information exchange, creating a durable network that survived well past his death in 1901.
