Early Career and Training
Honegger received his primary education at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, where he focused on shop-window display. By 1948, he began teaching at the same institution. His professional foundation was built in commercial graphics, a role that led to his position as the art director at Geigy between 1955 and 1958. This period of his life preceded a move to New York City in 1958, where he remained until 1960 and hosted his inaugural exhibition.
Transition to Abstract Art
In 1961, Honegger relocated to Paris to dedicate his efforts exclusively to painting. During this phase, his work became characterized by a rigorous investigation of geometric forms, specifically squares and circles. This aesthetic trajectory aligned with the principles of concrete art. By 1968, he expanded his artistic range to include sculpture, further diversifying his output beyond the two-dimensional canvas.

Beyond his studio practice, Honegger engaged with institutions abroad, including serving as an artist in residence at the University of Dallas in Texas. He also worked for Advico AG. His geographical footprint shifted throughout his life, with significant time spent working in Zurich, Paris, Cannes, and Mouans-Sartoux. His contributions to the field were recognized with the title of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres in 1996 and as a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2000.
Legacy and Notable Works
Honegger is recognized for significant pieces such as Culurs and Tribute to Jacques Monod. His marriage to the illustrator Warja Lavater linked two creative paths within the Swiss art community. He continued his creative pursuits until his death in Zurich on 17 January 2016 at the age of 98, following a short illness.
