Goodluck Jonathan

President of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015

Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, born in 1957 in Otuoke, served as the President of Nigeria between 2010 and 2015. His tenure marked a significant shift in the nation's political trajectory, as he became the first incumbent leader in the history of the country to formally concede defeat in a presidential election to an opposition candidate.

Early Life and Academic Background

Raised in a Christian Ijaw family by a father who worked as a canoe maker and a mother who was a retired farmer, Jonathan pursued a distinct academic path before entering the public sector. He earned a bachelor's degree in zoology, followed by a master's in hydrobiology and fisheries biology, and eventually a doctorate in zoology from the University of Port Harcourt. Between 1983 and 1993, he utilized this education while serving as a lecturer at the Rivers State College of Education.

Transition into Regional and National Leadership

Jonathan began his political career in the late 1990s with the Peoples Democratic Party. He served as the deputy governor of Bayelsa State from 1999 until 2005, ascending to the governorship in December 2005 following the removal of his predecessor. In 2007, he moved to the federal level as the Vice President of Nigeria. Following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua in May 2010, Jonathan assumed the presidency, a position he retained after winning the 2011 general election.

Economic and Infrastructure Initiatives

During his presidency, Nigeria rebased its gross domestic product, subsequently becoming the largest economy in Africa. His administration prioritized infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Abuja-Kaduna railway, the second Niger Bridge, and the modernization of several airports, such as the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu. Additionally, in 2010, he initiated a roadmap for power sector reform, which involved breaking up the Power Holding Company of Nigeria and transferring electricity assets to private entities to address long-standing supply issues.
