The EP Alohara (Can You Feel It?), released in July 2015, marked the official solo debut of South Korean singer Goo Hara. Her professional path began in 2008 when she joined the girl group Kara, a role that defined her early career before she transitioned into acting, hosting, and independent solo projects across South Korea and Japan.
Career with Kara
Goo joined Kara in 2008 following the exit of Kim Sung-hee. Her profile grew through participation in the reality show Invincible Youth starting in 2009. She expanded into television drama in 2011 with a role as Choi Da-hye in the SBS series City Hunter. By November 2011, she served as an MC for the music program Inkigayo alongside fellow member Nicole Jung, maintaining the role until August 2012. Her tenure with the group concluded in January 2016 when her contract with DSP Media expired.

Following the disbandment of Kara, Goo pursued solo work under the agency KeyEast. Her professional portfolio included hosting duties for programs such as A Style For You, My Mad Beauty Diary, and Seoul Mate. She also published a beauty book titled Nail Hara in 2015. Her solo musical output included the 2018 soundtrack for the drama Jugglers and the single Wild. In 2019, she signed with Production Ogi to focus on her career in Japan, where she had maintained a significant fan base since her time with Kara.
Legal Challenges and Public Scrutiny
In 2018, Goo entered a legal dispute with her former partner, Choi Jong-bum, involving allegations of assault and threats regarding private video recordings. This public conflict resulted in professional instability, including the decision by Content Y not to renew her contract in early 2019. Goo later played a significant role in exposing the identity of a police officer involved in the KakaoTalk chatroom scandal. She faced recurring public harassment during her career, a situation that intensified following the death of her close associate, Sulli, in October 2019.
Final Projects
Goo's final professional release was the maxi single Midnight Queen, launched on September 19, 2019. To promote this work, she conducted the Hara Zepp Tour 2019: Hello, a series of four concert dates across Japan that concluded on November 19, 2019. On November 24, 2019, Goo was found dead at her home in Seoul at the age of 28. Her death was ruled a suicide.
