The Piazza del Duomo Competition

Following a period of urban renewal in Milan, the city council organized a competition to reorganize the area surrounding the Piazza del Duomo. Mengoni presented a proposal in 1861 that established a link between the square and the Teatro alla Scala. After a second competitive phase in 1863 against Giuseppe Pestagalli and Niccolò Matas, Mengoni secured the commission despite significant resistance from professional circles who critiqued the scale and grandeur of his design.

Architectural Innovation and The Galleria

The design for the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II utilized prefabricated iron and glass elements supplied by the Paris-based firm of Henry Joret. This structural approach allowed for a centralized octagon topped by a complex dome. Construction necessitated the removal of existing medieval buildings and faced logistical delays, including the eventual bankruptcy of the English firm initially contracted to manage the project. The city council ultimately assumed control of the site to complete the work.

Later Commissions and Final Projects

In his capacity as an architect, he also designed the Palazzo di Residenza of the Bologna Saving Bank. His urban planning contributions extended to schemes in Rome, Rimini, and Cesena throughout the 1870s. He maintained his role as a member of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno until his death in 1877.
