Early Administrative Development

Marotta launched his career at 21 years old as the Director of the Youth Department at Varese. During his initial years in the sport, he honed his organizational skills at Monza, Como, and Ravenna, managing clubs across the lower rungs of the Italian football pyramid.

Operations at Venezia and Atalanta

In 1995, Maurizio Zamparini recruited Marotta to oversee operations at Venezia. This tenure resulted in a promotion to Serie A in 1998, ending a thirty-year absence from the top flight. Following his departure in 2000, he spent two seasons at Atalanta, where the team achieved consecutive top-ten finishes in the Serie A standings.

Restructuring Sampdoria

Upon joining Sampdoria, Marotta facilitated an aggressive squad overhaul supported by owner Riccardo Garrone. By collaborating with coach Walter Novellino, he secured promotion to Serie A in 2003. Elevated to chief executive officer in 2004, he later orchestrated the arrivals of Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini. Under his direction, the team eventually qualified for the 2010–11 Champions League.

Leadership at Juventus

Andrea Agnelli appointed Marotta as the general manager of the Sports Area at Juventus in 2010. He joined the Board of Directors that October and took on the role of CEO. During his tenure, he prioritized roster renewal, moving to replace existing personnel and appointing Antonio Conte as head coach in 2011 to redefine the team's competitive outlook.
