Thirty years spent teaching ancient philosophy at the University of Pisa defined the career of Giorgio Colli. Born in Turin in 1917, he established himself as a prominent scholar and translator. His academic output bridged historical analysis and original philosophical inquiry, leaving an extensive body of work that continues to circulate through various European publishing houses.
Academic Foundation and Career
Colli completed his formal education at the University of Turin before transitioning into his long-term role at the University of Pisa. Throughout his tenure, he focused on the rigorous study of historical philosophical texts. His career involved translating and editing significant classical works for Einaudi, establishing a reputation for meticulous textual scholarship within the Italian academic community.

A significant portion of his scholarly output was produced in collaboration with Mazzino Montinari. Together, they worked on comprehensive editions of historical philosophical material, focusing on chronological accuracy and the preservation of previously unorganized fragments. This partnership allowed for a systematic re-examination of complex intellectual legacies that had been historically subject to fragmented or inaccurate presentation.
Research on Ancient Wisdom
His final major endeavor, titled La Sapienza greca, sought to provide a complete translation and edition of early Greek philosophical thought. Colli explicitly rejected the term Presocratics to describe these thinkers. The project was intended to span eleven volumes but remained incomplete at the time of his death in Fiesole in January 1979.
Selected Bibliography
Beyond his work on classical authors, Colli authored numerous books including Physis kryptesthai philei, released in 1948, and Filosofia dell'espressione, published in 1969. Later works, such as Dopo Nietzsche and La nascita della filosofia, appeared during the 1970s. Posthumous collections, including La ragione errabonda and Scritti su Nietzsche, further documented his theories on distance, contact, and the evolution of philosophical expression.
