Giorgio Armani reshaped contemporary attire by stripping the structure from tailoring, introducing deconstructed silhouettes that defined a new era of elegance. Beyond his influence on masculine and feminine aesthetics, he transformed his name into a global commercial empire, extending the reach of his label from high-end ready-to-wear collections into diverse sectors including hospitality, cosmetics, and film costuming.
Military Service and Early Development
Born in Piacenza in 1934, Armani transitioned from modest beginnings to medical studies at the University of Milan. He interrupted his education in 1953 to fulfill his mandatory military service, an experience that led him to the Military Hospital in Verona. This period served as a turning point, steering him away from medicine and toward the creative ambitions that would define his professional future.
Establishing a Foundation
Following his military discharge, he entered the fashion industry in 1957 as a window dresser and sales clerk at the La Rinascente department store in Milan. His transition into design occurred through a tenure with the Nino Cerruti company, where he focused on menswear. During the late 1960s, he met architect Sergio Galeotti. Their collaboration led to the opening of a design office in 1973, setting the stage for the creation of his own house.
