Gilbert Gottfried

The fifteen-year-old Gilbert Gottfried first stepped onto the stage at The Bitter End in Greenwich Village, launching a career that spanned over five decades. Known for a distinctive, abrasive vocal delivery and a piercing New York dialect, he navigated a diverse landscape of stand-up comedy, television production, and voice acting, leaving behind a vast body of recorded performances.

Early Development and Comedy Circuit

Born in 1955 in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, Gottfried was raised in a Jewish family alongside his sisters Arlene and Karen. His parents, Max and Lillian, managed a hardware store where the family resided. Encouraged by his sisters to pursue performance, he began his career mastering impressions of figures such as Boris Karloff and Humphrey Bogart. After honing his act in local venues, he cultivated a reputation as a difficult but skilled performer, occasionally opting to challenge audiences with provocative material even when such choices threatened his employment status.

Television and Animation Roles

Gottfried joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1980 for its sixth season, though he was rarely utilized by the writing staff during his twelve-episode tenure. He later secured a steady presence on television through his hosting duties on the Saturday edition of USA Up All Night from 1989 to 1998. His vocal work defined many animated projects, including his portrayal of the parrot Iago in the Aladdin franchise, Digit LeBoid in Cyberchase, and Mister Mxyzptlk in various DC animated programs. He also spent years as the voice of the Aflac duck until his replacement in 2011.

Podcast Hosting and Final Years

In his later career, Gottfried focused on archival preservation and industry discussion through Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast, which he launched in 2014 alongside co-host Frank Santopadre. The show centered on deep dives into classic cinema and interviews with veteran entertainers. This era of his life was further documented in the 2017 film Gilbert. He remained active in the entertainment industry until his death in Manhattan in 2022, following a career that garnered him a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award.
