A 6,000 Swiss franc monthly salary offer from Genoa once tempted Gilbert Facchinetti, the entrepreneur and building contractor whose career spanned from the football pitch to the boardroom of Neuchâtel Xamax. Born in Lausanne in 1936 to an Italian-Swiss family, his trajectory bridged the gap between professional sports and the local construction industry.
Early Career and Transition
Before his emergence in management, Facchinetti pursued a career in football, beginning with an apprenticeship as a butcher. He played for Servette FC and later for FC Cantonal Neuchâtel, where he participated in his final national league match in 1969. Following the death of his uncle, his father mandated his transition into the family architecture firm, shifting his primary focus toward business.

In 1979, Facchinetti assumed the leadership of Neuchâtel Xamax, a club formed through the merger of FC Cantonal and FC Xamax. Over twenty-four years at the helm, he cultivated strong ties with the Neuchâtel economic community to finance club operations. This period yielded significant sporting success, specifically the Swiss championship titles secured in 1987 and 1988. During his tenure, he facilitated the recruitment of notable personnel, including players Heinz Hermann, Uli Stielike, Hossam Hassan, and Lajos Detári, alongside coach Gilbert Gress.
Business Ethics and Later Years
Facchinetti was noted for his preference for verbal agreements, often settling contracts with a handshake. He ceased this practice only after experiencing instances where players demanded significant sums despite prior oral agreements. In 2003, he transitioned the executive director role to Alain Pedretti. Despite this departure, he retained the title of honorary president and returned to official duties in 2012 following the club's bankruptcy. He resided in Neuchâtel until his passing in 2018, having witnessed the club earn promotion to the Swiss first division shortly before his death.
