Since 1985, Thupten Jinpa has served as the principal English translator for the Tibetan leader. Born in 1958 in Dzongkar, People's Republic of China, he transitioned from a monastic life in India to a career in academia. His work bridges Eastern and Western thought through rigorous scholarship, translation, and editorial projects focused on Buddhist philosophy and psychology.
Monastic Education and Training
Early education occurred at Zongkar Choede Monastery in Hunsur, near Mysore, South India. He later moved to Mundgod, South India, to attend Shartse College of Ganden monastic university. He earned the Geshe Lharam degree and subsequently spent five years instructing students in Buddhist epistemology, metaphysics, Middle Way philosophy, and Buddhist psychology.

He holds a B.A. Honors degree in Western Philosophy and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies, both obtained from Cambridge University. Between 1996 and 1999, he served as the Margaret Smith Research Fellow in Eastern Religion at Girton College, Cambridge. He maintains a role as a visiting research scholar at the Stanford Institute for Neuro-Innovation and Translational Neurosciences at Stanford University.
Editorial and Institutional Work
He founded the Institute of Tibetan Classics, where he serves as president and editor-in-chief for the Classics in Tibet translation series. As a member of the advisory board for the Mind and Life Institute, he promotes dialogue between Buddhist traditions and Western scientific disciplines. His bibliography includes works such as Self, Reality and Reason in Tibetan Thought: Tsongkhapa's Quest for the Middle View and Tibetan Songs of Spiritual Experience, which he co-edited with Jas Elsner.
Translation Contributions
He has edited and translated over ten books. Notable titles include The World of Tibetan Buddhism, published by Wisdom Publications in 1993, and A Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective on the Teachings of Jesus, released by the same publisher in 1996. He also worked on the 1999 New York Times bestseller, Ethics for the New Millennium, published by Riverhead.
