Early Development and Military Service
Before his vocal career flourished, Ots attended the Tallinn French School and the Tallinn University of Technology. His early experience included service as a Navy officer. In 1941, he survived the sinking of a ship bombarded by the Kriegsmarine and was transported to Kurgan. Following this event, he transitioned toward music, studying under Aleksander Rahnel in Yaroslavl before enrolling at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

Ots debuted in Eugene Onegin in 1944. From 1951, he was based at the Estonian National Opera, though he frequently appeared at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. His expansive repertoire included roles such as Papageno, Rigoletto, Don Giovanni, Escamillo, and the lead in Anton Rubinstein's The Demon. He sang in Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Italian, and Russian. His film work included a leading part in Between Three Plagues, a production adapted from a historical novel by Jaan Kross.
Awards and Later Life
Throughout his career, Ots earned numerous accolades, including the Stalin Prize in 1950 and 1952, the Order of the Badge of Honour in 1950, and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1956. He later received the USSR State Prize in 1968 and the Order of Lenin in 1970. In 1972, he received a diagnosis of brain cancer. He died in 1975 at age 55 in Tallinn and was buried at Metsakalmistu.
