Georg Nöbeling

mathematician (1907–2008)

A doctoral thesis completed in 1931 provided a generalization of the embedding theorem, marking the entry of Georg Nöbeling into the specialized study of n-dimensional universal sets. This research, published in Mathematische Annalen, demonstrated early expertise in metric spaces that would define his professional trajectory as a mathematician and university teacher throughout the twentieth century.

Academic Formation

Born in 1907 in Lüdenscheid, Nöbeling pursued higher education at the University of Göttingen from 1927 to 1929. He subsequently moved to the University of Vienna, where he studied under Karl Menger. During this period, he engaged with Menger’s Mathematical Colloquium, a forum for researchers including Kurt Gödel, Franz Alt, Abraham Wald, and Olga Taussky-Todd. He earned his doctorate in 1931.

Career at Erlangen

Nöbeling transitioned to the University of Erlangen in 1933. He completed his habilitation under Otto Haupt in 1935 and attained a professorship by 1940. His research output focused on geometry, topology, and mathematical analysis. During his tenure, he served as Rector of the university from 1962 to 1963, a term characterized by the integration of the institution with the business college located in Nuremberg.

Professional Contributions

Beyond his teaching duties, Nöbeling occupied several administrative roles, including two terms as chairman of the German Mathematical Society. His scholarly activity continued throughout his later years, notably marked by his solution of a theorem concerning abelian groups published in Inventiones mathematicae in 1968. He held membership in the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and received the Bavarian Order of Merit.
