The Harpsichord Concerto in C by Georg Benda reached a modern audience in 1987 when it featured in a concept video for Apple Computer. Born in 1722 in Benátky nad Jizerou, Bohemia, this composer spent his life navigating the professional landscape of the classical period as a violinist, pianist, and court-appointed musician.
Early Career and Appointments
Benda attended the Piarist Gymnasium in Kosmanos and later the Jesuit Gymnasium in Gitschin between 1735 and 1742. In 1741, Frederick the Great appointed him as a second violinist for the Berlin chapel. Shortly after, he relocated to Potsdam to serve as a composer and arranger for his brother, Franz Benda. By 1749, he began his tenure with the Duke of Gotha, where he served as Kapellmeister.

In 1774, the theatrical troupe of Abel Seyler arrived in Gotha, prompting Benda to compose several successful melodramas. These stage works, characterized by their musical execution, include Ariadne auf Naxos, Medea, and Pygmalion. Ariadne auf Naxos, debuting in 1775, gained significant recognition across Europe. Critics noted the work for its ingenuity and sweetness, and the form itself exerted a notable influence on Mozart.
Compositional Output and Later Years
Benda’s catalog included approximately ten operas and various Singspiels, such as Der Jahrmarkt and Romeo und Julie. Beyond vocal music, he produced numerous instrumental pieces, including symphonies, keyboard sonatas, and violin concertos. He also composed music for masonic rituals. After resigning his Gotha position in 1778, Benda traveled to Hamburg and Vienna before settling in Bad Köstritz, where he died in 1795 at the age of 73.
