Following a stint as an IBM Research Fellow at New College, Oxford, between 1974 and 1976, Grimmett transitioned to the University of Bristol. In 1992, he joined the University of Cambridge as Professor of Mathematical Statistics, becoming a fellow of Churchill College. His administrative career at Cambridge included directing the Statistical Laboratory from 1994 to 2000 and leading the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics from 2002 to 2007.
Research and Contributions
His scholarship centers on the rigorous analysis of disordered physical systems. His work on the random-cluster model encompasses the Potts and Ising models of ferromagnetism, and his published monograph regarding percolation remains a reference text in probability. Beyond these topics, he has contributed to probabilistic combinatorics and probabilistic number theory.
