Geoff Hurst

Geoffrey Charles Hurst secured a place in sporting history as the first player to record a hat-trick in a World Cup final. During the 1966 tournament, he led England to a 4-2 victory against West Germany at Wembley, establishing a performance mark that remains unmatched in the championship's final matches.

Early Career and Cricket Interests

Born in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1941, Hurst grew up in a footballing family; his father, Charlie Hurst, played professionally for Bristol Rovers, Oldham Athletic, and Rochdale. Before committing fully to football, Hurst explored cricket, appearing for the Essex Second XI between 1962 and 1964. He made one first-class cricket appearance for Essex against Lancashire in 1962, but eventually abandoned the sport to focus on his professional football career.

West Ham United Years

Hurst joined West Ham United as an apprentice at age 15, turning professional in 1959. Initially playing as a midfielder, he shifted to a striker position in 1962 under manager Ron Greenwood. This transition proved effective, yielding 242 goals in 500 first-team appearances. During his tenure, he helped the club secure the 1964 FA Cup and the 1965 European Cup Winners' Cup. By 1966, his scoring output was such that West Ham rejected a £200,000 transfer bid from Manchester United.

Professional Evolution and Coaching

Following his lengthy tenure at West Ham, Hurst was sold to Stoke City in 1972 for £80,000. He spent three seasons there, winning the Watney Cup in 1973, before concluding his Football League career at West Bromwich Albion in 1976. He later played for Cork Celtic and the Seattle Sounders. His post-playing career involved management roles at Telford United and Chelsea between 1979 and 1981, as well as a coaching stint with Kuwait SC.
