Soyuz 15 carried Gennadi Sarafanov into orbit in 1974 for a mission aimed at docking with the Salyut 3 space station. Although the flight reached space, technical malfunctions within the docking system prevented the scheduled connection, forcing the crew to return to Earth without completing the primary objective of their intended residence in orbit.
Military Education and Career
Born in 1942 in Sinenkie, Sarafanov pursued a career in aviation that began with formal training at the Balashov Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots between 1960 and 1964. He later advanced his professional qualifications through the Gagarin Air Force Academy. His career trajectory saw him serve as both an aircraft pilot and a Soviet cosmonaut, eventually attaining the military rank of colonel.

Sarafanov remained part of the space programme until his resignation in 1986. Following his departure from active flight status, he transitioned into an academic role, where he lectured on technology. He furthered his scholarly standing by earning the academic degree of Candidate of Technical Sciences, reflecting his transition from operational pilot duties to technical instruction.
Recognitions and Final Years
Over the course of his career, the Soviet state formally honored his service with numerous decorations. These included the titles of Hero of the Soviet Union and Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR. His list of awards featured the Medal for the Development of Virgin Lands, the Medal for Impeccable Service (3rd class), and the Jubilee Medal for 50 and 60 years of the Armed Forces of the USSR, among others. He died in 2005 at Leonikha, Moscow, at the age of 63.
