Genevieve Nnaji

Nigerian actress, producer, and director

The 2018 film Lionheart marked a milestone for Nigerian cinema when it became the first original feature from the country acquired by Netflix. Directed by and starring Genevieve Nnaji, the project achieved international visibility, although its subsequent Oscar submission faced disqualification because the dialogue was predominantly in English, sparking a global debate regarding language requirements for international feature film recognition.

Early Career and Breakthrough

Born in Mbaise in 1979, Nnaji began her professional life as a child performer, appearing in the television soap opera Ripples at age eight. She transitioned into the burgeoning Nollywood motion picture industry during the late 1990s. Her introduction to feature film audiences occurred in 1998 with the movie Most Wanted. She subsequently appeared in over 200 films, including Last Party, Mark of the Beast, Ijele, and the 2010 production Ijé: The Journey.
