College and Development
Before reaching the professional ranks, Payton attended Skyline High School and later enrolled at Oregon State University. Playing for head coach Ralph Miller, he became a highly decorated collegiate athlete. During his senior season in 1989–90, he was named a consensus All-American and featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. By the time he graduated, he held numerous school records, including those for assists and steals. He was elected into the Oregon State Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.

Selected second overall in the 1990 NBA draft, Payton played twelve and a half seasons with the Seattle SuperSonics. Under coach George Karl, he and Shawn Kemp formed a dynamic duo known as the Sonic Boom. In 1996, the team set a franchise record with 64 wins and reached the NBA Finals. Throughout his tenure, he earned recognition as a premier defensive specialist, receiving the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 1996 and multiple selections to the NBA All-Defensive Team.
Professional Transitions
In 2003, Payton was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, where he rejoined George Karl. He later signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2003–04 season, starting all 82 games. His career continued with stints for the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat. He made three NBA Finals appearances during his career, winning a championship with the Heat in 2006.
