Early Development and South American Stints
Medel joined Universidad Católica at age 12, eventually entering the senior ranks under coach Mario Lepe. In 2009, he moved to Boca Juniors on an initial loan agreement. During his time in Argentina, he made a notable impact by scoring both goals in a 2-0 Superclásico victory over River Plate on 25 March 2010. After his European tenure, he returned to the region to sign with Vasco da Gama in July 2023, followed by a second spell at Boca Juniors in 2024. His European journey began on 28 January 2011 when he signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Sevilla for €3 million. He later joined Cardiff City in 2013 for a club-record £11 million fee. In 2014, he moved to Inter Milan for £10 million, where he made his 100th appearance during a 7-1 win over Atalanta in March 2017. Subsequent moves included a three-year contract with Beşiktaş in 2017 and a three-year deal with Bologna in 2019, where he made his debut against SPAL.
International Competition
Since 2007, Medel has earned over 160 caps. He played in five Copa América tournaments, including the 2015 victory and the 2016 Copa América Centenario title. His World Cup experience includes the 2010 edition in South Africa and the 2014 tournament in Brazil. He also participated in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
