Starting in 1990, Honsell served as a full professor of computer science at the University of Udine. His administrative responsibilities grew quickly; he directed the university's computing center until 1992 and the department of mathematics and computer science from 1992 until 1995. Subsequently, he acted as Dean of the faculty of mathematical, physical and natural sciences between 1995 and 1998. In 2001, he was elected Rector of the University of Udine, a position he maintained for seven years.
Mayoral Terms and Regional Politics
In 2008, Honsell transitioned into politics, securing the office of Mayor of Udine with the support of a centre-left coalition. Voters re-elected him to the post in 2013. He resigned as mayor in January 2018 to compete in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia regional elections under the Open - Sinistra FVG list. Following his election to the regional council, he achieved re-election in a subsequent cycle. In 2022, he represented the centre-left coalition as a Senate candidate for Friuli-Venezia Giulia, securing 25.98 percent of the vote but failing to defeat the opposing candidate, Luca Ciriani.
