Early Career and Education
Born in 1951 in Heilongjiang, Fu pursued technical education before entering the energy industry. He earned a degree from Northeastern University and subsequently obtained a master's degree in petroleum engineering from the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. Starting in 1983, Fu directed management committees for partnerships between the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) and various global petroleum entities. His collaborators included Shell, Amoco, Chevron, Texaco, Phillips, and Agip. In 1994, he took on dual responsibilities as deputy general manager for CNOOC Nanhai East Corporation and vice president of Phillips Asia Inc.
Leadership at CNOOC and Sinopec
Fu ascended through the CNOOC hierarchy, serving as general manager of CNOOC Nanhai East Corporation in 1999. Within months, he became an executive director, chief operating officer, and executive vice president of CNOOC Limited. By 2002, he led China Oilfield Services Limited as CEO and board chairman. He reached the presidency of CNOOC in 2003, overseeing a significant period of profit growth. In April 2011, he transitioned to the position of chairman of the Sinopec Group.
Political and Industry Influence
Beyond his corporate mandates, Fu serves as a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. His career has been recognized by industry analysts; in December 2014, Lloyd's List named him among the most influential individuals within the shipping sector.
