Early Career and Move to Rosenborg
Johnsen began his professional journey with Skotfoss TIF before joining Odd Grenland. He made his debut in the Norwegian Premier League in 1999 at age 25. He secured multiple championships, notably in 2004 when his stoppage-time diving header against FC Lyn secured the league title on a dramatic final day. In 2001, he finished as the league's joint top scorer with 17 goals. By the time he departed in 2006, he had accumulated 125 goals across 234 appearances for the club.
Japanese Tenure
In July 2006, Johnsen moved to Japan to join Nagoya Grampus Eight, signing an 18-month contract. His impact was immediate, scoring twice on his debut. He remained in Japan until 2010, playing for Nagoya and later Shimizu S-Pulse. His time abroad included competitive runs in the J1 League, where he proved his durability and skill, including a hat-trick against Shonan Bellmare in 2010.
Retirement and Legacy
Returning to his roots, Johnsen rejoined Odds BK in 2011. In 2013, he earned the Kniksen Award for striker of the year and secured his position as the top scorer in the Tippeligaen. His career concluded in 2015 at age 41, when he received the Kniksen's Honour Award. Internationally, he earned 34 caps for Norway and scored 10 goals between 2000 and his final recall in 2013.
