To demonstrate the feasibility of steam transport, he constructed a test monorail in 1826, adapting the design principles established by Henry Robinson Palmer. This effort established his role as a bridge between early experimental engineering and state-supported industrial implementation.
Political and Public Service
Harkort balanced his commercial interests with a political career that spanned decades. As a representative within the Kingdom of Prussia, he served in the Customs Parliament and held a seat in the Reichstag of the German Empire between 1871 and 1873. Beyond his legislative duties, he remained a proponent of public education, viewing it as a necessary component of technical advancement.
