Friedrich Dürrenmatt

Swiss author and dramatist (1921–1990)

The 1947 premiere of the play It Is Written triggered public protests and physical altercations among audience members, marking an abrasive entry into the literary scene for the young Swiss author. Friedrich Dürrenmatt would go on to reshape twentieth-century drama through a commitment to epic theatre, philosophical inquiry, and a sharp, macabre satire that interrogated the moral failures of the postwar era.

Early Development and Political Stances

Born in 1921 in Konolfingen, Dürrenmatt was the son of a Protestant pastor. His early intellectual formation involved studies in philosophy and literature at the universities of Zurich and Bern. During his student years, he briefly engaged with the Fröntler movement, an affiliation he later identified as a reactionary attempt to distance himself from his father’s authority. By 1943, he committed fully to writing. His political consciousness deepened over the decades, culminating in his 1990 speech regarding the Swiss secret service's surveillance of citizens, an address delivered in honor of Václav Havel.

The Evolution of Epic Theatre

Dürrenmatt frequently drew comparisons to Bertolt Brecht as a primary theorist of epic theatre. His dramatic output used the stage to examine power, science, and societal collapse. Following the controversy of his debut, he achieved success with Romulus the Great, which utilized the fall of Rome to examine historical decline. His most recognized work, The Visit, functions as a grotesque tragicomedy, while The Physicists explores the dangerous intersection of scientific advancement and state responsibility. In 1970, he officially announced a shift away from original playwriting toward adaptation and critical essay production.

Crime Fiction and Prose

Beyond the theatre, Dürrenmatt gained prominence for deconstructing the detective novel. Works such as The Judge and His Hangman and its sequel, Suspicion, utilize the tropes of mystery fiction to explore deeper existential and philosophical anxieties. His novella The Pledge: Requiem for the Detective Novel remains a critical piece of his prose portfolio. His literary voice remained strictly rooted in German and Swiss German, reflecting his identity as a member of the German Academy for Language and Literature.

A Private Life in Art

While writing provided his primary public identity, Dürrenmatt maintained a consistent, private practice in painting and graphic art. These works were rarely showcased during his life, with only select exhibits appearing in Neuchâtel and Zurich between 1976 and 1985. Following his death in 1990 due to heart failure, his former home in Neuchâtel was transformed into the Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel, which currently houses over 1,000 of his artistic pieces, permanently merging his literary and visual legacies.
