The Dresden Court Orchestra employed Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer as a cellist from 1811 until his retirement in 1850. Throughout his tenure in the Kingdom of Saxony, he performed under the direction of Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner, participating in the debut performances of the operas Rienzi and The Flying Dutchman.
Early Training and Orchestral Beginnings
Born in 1783 in Häselrieth, near Hildburghausen, Dotzauer received musical encouragement from his father, who was a pastor. His foundational studies included piano, violin, cello, horn, and clarinet. Under the organist Johann Caspar Rüttinger, he pursued theory and composition. Later, in Meiningen, he refined his cello technique with Johann Jacob Kriegk, the Konzertmeister of the Meiningen Court Orchestra, subsequently joining that ensemble in 1801.

In 1805, Dotzauer relocated to Leipzig to join the Gewandhaus Orchestra. During this tenure, he sought out the cellist Bernhard Romberg in Berlin to further develop his performance capabilities. His collaborative efforts in Leipzig included co-founding the Gewandhaus Quartet alongside Heinrich August Matthaei, Bartolomeo Campagnoli, and Johann Georg Hermann Voigt.
Dresden Career and Pedagogy
Dotzauer attained the position of principal cellist in the Dresden Court Orchestra by 1821. Beyond his orchestral duties, he undertook concert tours across Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. As a music educator, he influenced a new generation of musicians, counting Friedrich August Kummer and Karl Drechsler among his students. His commitment to the craft extended to his family, with his sons Justus Bernhard Friedrich and Karl Louis both pursuing careers in music.
Musical Output
The compositions of Dotzauer reflect his focus on the mechanics of his primary instrument, featuring numerous studies and exercises for solo cello. His wider body of work encompasses nine cello concertos, various chamber music compositions such as string quartets, as well as masses and additional church music. He also completed one opera. He died in Dresden in 1860 at the age of 77.
