Friedrich Bachmann

German mathematician (1909–1982)

Friedrich Bachmann was a German mathematician whose research fundamentally shaped the axiomatic approach to geometry during the twentieth century. Born in Wernigerode in 1909, he established a career that bridged the foundations of mathematics, mathematical logic, and the structural development of group theory, leaving an extensive bibliography that includes influential monographs on mirror geometry and absolute geometry.

Academic Foundations and Early Work

Bachmann began his higher education at the University of Münster and the Frederick William University in Berlin, graduating in 1927. He pursued his doctoral studies under the guidance of Heinrich Scholz, completing his thesis in 1933. The work, titled Untersuchungen zur Grundlegung der Arithmetik mit besonderer Beziehung auf Dedekind, Frege, und Russell, focused on the logical foundations of arithmetic. During this period, he was also associated with the Münster Wingolfs.

Professional Appointments and War-time Career

His career spanned several prominent German institutions. In 1935, he moved to the University of Marburg to assist Kurt Reidemeister, where he eventually qualified as a Privatdozent in 1939. His academic trajectory continued through various roles, including positions at the University of Königsberg and a return to the Frederick William University in Berlin between 1941 and 1944. Throughout these years, he published significant articles on extremal axioms and absolute geometry.

Contributions to Geometry at Kiel

In 1944, Bachmann joined the faculty at Kiel University, eventually attaining the status of full professor on March 1, 1949. Working alongside Karl-Heinrich Weise, he directed efforts to reconstruct the university's mathematics department following the war. His research moved toward the axiomatic justification of elementary geometry using mirroring operations, a program initiated by Johannes Hjelmslev. His definitive book on this subject, Aufbau der Geometrie aus dem Spiegelungsbegriff, became a standard reference in the field.

Administrative and Editorial Leadership

Beyond his research, Bachmann was deeply involved in the administration of mathematics education. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy’s mathematics department at Kiel University from 1962 to 1963. Starting in 1960, he also acted as editor for the series Grundzüge der Mathematik für Lehrer an Gymnasien sowie für Mathematiker in Industrie und Wirtschaft, aimed at both school educators and professionals working in industrial sectors. He remained at Kiel University until his retirement on March 31, 1977.
