Academic Foundation
Born in Hamburg in 1961, Appel completed his formative education at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. He attained a Master of Science degree in chemistry in 1989. Appel joined Deutsche Post in 2000. By November 2002, he attained a position on the Board of Management of Deutsche Post AG. He held the role of chief executive officer from 2008 until 2023. During this time, he frequently engaged in international diplomacy, accompanying Chancellor Angela Merkel on state visits to China in 2012 and 2014.

Since exiting his executive role at Deutsche Post, Appel has maintained an extensive presence on various supervisory boards. At the shareholders' meeting on April 7, 2022, he was elected to the supervisory board of Deutsche Telekom AG, where he subsequently became chairman, succeeding Ulrich Lehner.
