Philosophy of Representation
Ankersmit developed a narrativist approach to history during the 1980s, arguing that historians create coherence by constructing narratives rather than merely translating meaning from the past. By the 1990s, he shifted his focus toward a formal theory of representation. He posited that historical representation acts as a substitute for an absent past, creating meaning through the act of writing. His methodology frequently addresses historical rationality and the criteria by which historians select specific representations. In 2024, he released his comprehensive work, Representation: The Birth of Historical Reality from the Death of the Past.

Active in Dutch public debate, Ankersmit was a member of the VVD party and contributed to their Liberal Manifesto. He left the party in 2009, critiquing its shift toward neoliberalism, which he likened to a return to feudal structures where public responsibilities are outsourced to private entities. He served on the National Convention commissioned to strengthen democracy. Later, he joined the political party Forum for Democracy in 2016 but resigned by the end of 2017, citing concerns regarding internal democratic practices.
Academic Recognition
Ankersmit holds memberships in the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Academia Europaea. In 2008, he was awarded the Socrates-challenge cup for his writing on historical experience. Following his retirement from the University of Groningen in 2010, he was named an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau by the Queen of the Netherlands. The University of Ghent granted him an honorary degree in the humanities in 2011.
