Francisco Piria purchased 2,700 hectares of land in 1890, stretching from Sugar Loaf Mountain to the coast, to establish the first seaside resort town in Uruguay. His work spanned finance, journalism, and politics, eventually culminating in the development of Piriápolis, a project influenced by the design aesthetics of the French Riviera.
Early Business Ventures
Born in Montevideo in 1847 to Genoese immigrants Lorenzo Piria and Serafina de Grossi, he spent time in Italy for his education following his father's death. Upon returning to Uruguay, he received training in humanities and sciences from an uncle. His initial commercial activities included a clothing shop at the corner of Treinta y Tres and Rincón streets. He demonstrated significant advertising skills by producing and marketing a specific type of long cape he called the Rémington.

The development of Piriápolis began in 1905 with the construction of the Hotel Piriápolis, currently utilized as the Colonia Escolar de Vacaciones. In 1910, he initiated the construction of a promenade modeled after European seaside resorts. By 1912, he hosted the first auction of land parcels, prompting the growth of the town through the construction of numerous villas. He also commissioned the Piria Castle, which features a corresponding design in Buenos Aires.
Final Years and Legacy
Francisco Piria operated as a businessman, journalist, politician, and writer throughout his life. He died on December 11, 1933, at the age of 86 in Montevideo. His death was attributed to pulmonary congestion exacerbated by uremia, diabetes, and heart weakness. He is buried at the Cementerio del Buceo. In 2014, his life and contributions were explored in the documentary film titled Ciudadano Piria.
