Early Career and Filmography
After graduating from Hillcrest High School in 1975, Drescher pursued acting, securing early credits in American Hot Wax and Stranger in Our House in 1978. Throughout the 1980s, she established herself as a character actress, appearing in projects such as Gorp, The Hollywood Knights, Doctor Detroit, and UHF. Her performance as publicist Bobbi Flekman in the 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap became a recurring archetype in her work. She later transitioned into voice acting and film roles, including appearances in the animated Hotel Transylvania series and 2025 releases such as Marty Supreme and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

In 1993, Drescher achieved widespread recognition with the launch of the sitcom The Nanny, which she created alongside her then-husband Peter Marc Jacobson. During the show's six-year run on CBS, she earned two Emmy Award nominations and two Golden Globe Award nominations for her portrayal of Fran Fine. Following the conclusion of the series in 1999, she continued to work in television, starring in Living with Fran from 2005 to 2006, the sitcom Happily Divorced, and the 2020 NBC series Indebted.
Leadership at SAG-AFTRA
Drescher assumed the presidency of the actors' trade union SAG-AFTRA on October 15, 2021. Her tenure involved significant labor actions, most notably leading the union during a five-month strike that commenced on July 14, 2023. This labor dispute partially coincided with an ongoing writers' strike. In July 2024, she directed an additional strike against major video game publishers, which concluded in 2025.
