He achieved critical recognition for his portrayal of Charlie Parker in the 1988 film Bird, winning the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor. In 2007, his performance as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland secured him an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for Best Actor. As a director, his work includes the television film Strapped and theatrical releases such as Waiting to Exhale, Hope Floats, and First Daughter.
