Engineering Education and Collaboration
Born in Lucca, Italy, in 1808, Felice Matteucci pursued formal studies in hydraulic and mechanical engineering in Paris and Florence. In 1851, he formed a professional partnership with Father Eugenio Barsanti after reviewing original concepts for a new engine type. The two men collaborated to refine the primary design into a model suitable for commercial manufacturing.

The partners contracted the Milan-based firm Bauer & Co., also known as Helvetica, to construct the engine. By early 1863, the company delivered the motor, which demonstrated efficiency levels surpassing existing steam-powered technology. Interest in the device extended internationally, with orders arriving from as far away as Constantinople. In 1864, Barsanti traveled to Belgium to finalize production agreements with a local firm, but his sudden death in April of that year halted their collective efforts.
Hydraulic Specialization and Intellectual Property
Following the dissolution of his partnership, Matteucci resumed his practice as a civil and hydraulic engineer. He focused on hydrometric developments, including the invention of new rain gauges and instruments to monitor river water levels. In 1874, he published research regarding automatic instruments for tracking rainfall and river fluctuations, followed in 1875 by a work on overflow spillways. In 1877, he challenged the originality of the internal combustion engine patent held by Nicolaus August Otto, asserting his and Barsanti's priority. The archives at the Museo Galileo in Florence house the documents verifying their patents across England, Piedmont, France, Belgium, and Prussia.
