Early Education and Background
Born in 1976 in Beijing, Li moved to the United States at age 16. She attended Parsippany High School in New Jersey, graduating in 1995. Her academic path led to Princeton University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in physics in 1999. She continued her graduate studies at the California Institute of Technology, completing a Master of Science in 2001 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 2005, both in electrical engineering.

Li held early academic positions as an assistant professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Princeton University before joining the faculty at Stanford University in 2009. She achieved the rank of full professor in 2018. During her tenure at Stanford, she served as the director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 2013 to 2018. Her research output includes over 300 peer-reviewed publications covering computer vision and cognitive neuroscience.
Innovation in Computer Vision
While at Princeton in 2007, Li spearheaded the creation of ImageNet. This project involved annotating over 14 million images to address the lack of large-scale datasets required for machine learning.
