Federico Macheda

Federico Macheda emerged into international prominence at the age of seventeen, scoring a decisive injury-time goal for Manchester United against Aston Villa in April 2009. This dramatic introduction to the Premier League set high expectations for the young striker, who had relocated to England from his native Italy two years prior to sign his first professional contract.

Early Development in Rome and Manchester

Born in 1991 in Rome, Macheda started his football education at the Atletico Prenestino club before moving to the Lazio youth system. Due to Italian football regulations regarding youth contracts, he was ineligible for professional terms. Upon reaching the age of sixteen, he moved to England, joining Manchester United in September 2007. He quickly advanced through the club's ranks, finishing his debut season as the Under-18 top scorer with 12 goals.

Breakthrough and Manchester United Tenure

After a prolific run with the reserve team, Macheda earned his first-team debut under Alex Ferguson in 2009. His impact was immediate, scoring against Aston Villa and subsequently against Sunderland. Despite being named the Jimmy Murphy Academy Player of the Year, he struggled to secure a permanent starting position. He remained at the club until June 2014, although he spent much of this period on loan at various clubs, including Sampdoria, Queens Park Rangers, VfB Stuttgart, Doncaster Rovers, and Birmingham City.

Career Progression Post-Manchester

Following his release from Manchester United in 2014, Macheda joined Cardiff City for a two-year stint. His later career path included a loan spell at Nottingham Forest, eighteen months with Serie B side Novara, and a move to Ankaragücü in 2022. He subsequently played for APOEL on loan and later joined the Super League Greece club Asteras Tripolis. Throughout this period, he maintained his presence in professional football across multiple European leagues.

International Participation

Macheda represented Italy across several youth levels, including the under-16, under-17, under-19, and under-21 squads. In August 2009, he achieved a milestone by becoming the youngest player to debut for the Italian under-21 team at seventeen years and 355 days. He secured his first goals for the under-21 side during a match against Turkey in 2010.
