Early Life and Education
Born in Tehran, she was the daughter of Captain Sohrab Diba and Farideh Ghotbi. Her father, an officer in the Imperial Iranian Armed Forces, died in 1948, which placed the family in strained financial circumstances. Her education spanned several institutions, including Tehran’s Italian School and the French Jeanne d'Arc School. She later pursued architectural studies at the Special School of Architecture in Paris.

In 1959, while in Paris, she was introduced to Mohammad Reza Pahlavi at the Iranian embassy. The couple married in December 1959. The primary pressure on the new queen was the production of a male heir, a necessity for the Pahlavi dynasty. Following the birth of Crown Prince Reza in October 1960, she gained the freedom to pursue extensive charitable and cultural work, eventually patronizing 24 health, cultural, and educational organizations.
Political Exile and Current Status
By 1978, internal unrest forced the monarch and his empress to depart Iran in January 1979 under the threat of a death sentence. They found refuge in Egypt, where Mohammad Reza died in July 1980. Farah served as regent briefly until her son declared himself Shah of Iran in October 1980. Living in exile in France and the United States, she maintains a critical stance against the Iranian regime, voicing support for protestors in the wake of the 2022 killing of Mahsa Amini.
