Steel-concrete composite structures gained significant traction in Italy starting in 1955 thanks to the pioneering efforts of civil engineer Fabrizio de Miranda. Born in Naples in 1926, he spent his career at the Polytechnic University of Milan while simultaneously managing major industrial firms and designing hundreds of large-scale infrastructure projects across international borders.
Early Career and Industrial Management
After graduating from the University of Naples Federico II in 1950, de Miranda began an influential career in structural engineering. By 1959, he assumed the role of managing director at Costruzioni Metalliche Finsider S.p.A. in Milan, a position he held until 1967. During this time, he contributed to the development of early motorway viaducts, specifically the Coretta, Macinaie, and Poggio Palina projects completed in 1959.

De Miranda served as a professor of structural engineering at the Polytechnic University of Milan from 1965 until 1996. Beyond his teaching, he played a critical role in the Italian College of the Steel Structures Technicians, serving as its president between 1970 and 1973. His technical influence extended to international design circles, including the 1969 Messina Bridge competition where he shared first prize.
Structural Design Portfolio
In 1968, he established his own consulting engineering firm to focus on complex bridge and structural designs. His portfolio includes the 1961 Fiorenza-Milan elevated highway, the Genoa elevated highways built between 1963 and 1965, and the San Lorenzo-Rome project developed from 1969 to 1976. Internationally, he managed significant works such as the Rande Bridge in Spain, constructed between 1973 and 1977.
